Pediatric Dentistry in North Vancouver
The baby teeth lay the foundation for your child’s future smile, so practicing good routines from the beginning is imperative. Book an appointment with an experienced pediatric dentist who can help begin your care journey.
Our pediatric dentists can assess your child’s teeth and gums early and provide instruction on how to best care for them at the infant and toddler stage, right through to their teenage years.
A great time to consult with a pediatric dentist is between one and two years old, as they can create a baseline of development, as well as foster the beginning of a positive relationship between your child and dentistry.
Why Is It Important to Consult a Pediatric Dentist?
Pediatric dentists are trained to assess and address the needs of young patients from infancy through to the teenage years. They are highly knowledgeable and educated on the unique needs of children’s oral health and unlike your traditional dentist, they have additional foundations in understanding children’s behaviour.
These foundations allow them to interact with and treat your child in a safe and comfortable manner. Whether your child is neurodivergent or has any other special needs, our team is skilled in providing care for children of all types.
A 2018/19 British Columbia study of provincial dental health revealed that “69.2% were caries (cavity) free [with] (no visible decay or broken enamel),” leaving more than 30% with some type of cavity (treated or otherwise) or visible decay.
While oral care has shown a marked improvement since the survey, we can do better and strive to see continued progress; this starts with early care and intervention.
Along with assessing teeth and jaw growth and development, did you know that our pediatric specialists can determine if your child is at risk for developing cavities? We can also discuss any oral habits, such as thumb/finger sucking and bottle/pacifier use, that can impede proper development.
Our Process
- At Bayview Lonsdale Dentist, our friendly staff is ready to welcome your children like our own.
- We begin with our initial examination, tailored to suit your child’s age range. We look for age-appropriate teeth development, as well as gum and jaw assessments, early detection of cavities, malocclusion (bad bite pattern), attrition due to bruxism (teeth grinding), and other irregularities. X-Rays and computer modelling may be used when deemed appropriate.
- Next, we take preventive measures, which may include cleaning, sealants, and oral education for both patients and parents.
- Following assessment, we may determine that additional measures should be taken to correct alignment and treat oral trauma.
- We recommend follow-ups every six months to perform cleanings and check-ups unless the patient’s condition requires additional care.
- Finally, pediatric dentists stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in the pediatric dental field. Whether it is new information, or diagnostic or treatment procedures, we’ve got your child covered.

The Visit: Things to Keep in Mind
It’s important to remember that good oral health starts at home. Parents can best prepare their children for their first trip to the dentist by laying a positive foundation, starting by setting good examples, using age-appropriate education, and oral care routines.
When the first tooth erupts through the gum, parents can start by using a soft cloth to clean the area. As back teeth erupt, a soft toothbrush can be used, and so begins a daily care routine. The parent should do flossing and brushing until children develop the correct skills and dexterity to achieve the best results.
Daily routine and praise for a job well-done will encourage your child to make dental care a priority.
Once they understand the process and see it is nothing to be feared, a trip to our family-friendly facility is recommended to meet with our kids’ dental specialist. We will help make your child feel comfortable, explaining the process as we go, making oral care exciting, and taking into consideration your child’s comfort level.
If they are hesitant, we can start with a simple visit, including a tour of the office or ride in the chair, and work our way up to kid-friendly dentist check-ups!
